Invisible Urmston – Palace Designs By Nicky

We’re so pleased that you are all loving our Invisible Urmston mini series and it’s wonderful to be profiling some of those businesses that we don’t usually see every day.  Today, we’re chatting to Nicky from @palacedesignsbynicky

Nicky specialises in using permanent vinyl to create personalised gifts and homeware ranging from glasses and mugs to make-up bags and tote bags.  She can also create items on request and has even created baby shower sashes and personalised a gin bottle for a birthday gift!   She loves what she does and this comes across in the products that she creates, the packaging that she uses and the her great relationships with customers.  Based locally on Princess Road, she also has a shop on Etsy and effortlessly blends local customers with those from all over the UK.

Why did you set up in business?

“I set up Palace Designs in August 2020 as a creative distraction from the impact of COVID and a very busy day job as a Senior HR professional.  I have always loved finding personalised products to gift to my friends and family and have an obsession with labelling anything in my cupboards and house, so I thought I’d make my own gifts and labels and Palace Designs was born!”

What is your point of difference / what makes you different from everyone else?

I only sell high-quality products that I would buy myself and rather than over-complicate my designs I like to keep them simple for maximum impact.  I pride myself on giving my customers the option to personalise things using my designs or to chat through their own ideas with me that I then make into reality for them.  Personal and friendly customer service is really important to me and I also offer seasonal product ranges – the Christmas pet treat baubles were a huge hit!”

What were your last three local projects?

Aside from my day-to-day orders, such as my A4 notebooks having sold out three times, I get lots of requests for bespoke products.  Recently I created the vinyl decals and signage for a locally-made mud kitchen which was donated to a local school, customised two of our heart handle mugs for a customer who loves elephants and penguins and personalised mini Valentines gift crates for a local customer for her family members.”

What do you like most about living and working in Urmston?

My dad was in the Army so we moved around a lot as children.  We moved to Urmston when I was 14 and, apart from time away at University, I have lived here ever since.  I love the variety of our local high street and independent businesses, how we can easily access great countryside walks and that whenever I am out and about in Urmston I always see someone I know to have a chat.”

What are your favourite Urmston businesses?

“I love our local high street and have shopped there for years including when the seals were a big part of the Urmston landscape!  For shopping, I love Rose and Bumble, Freds and Craft Brewtique for beer-related gifts, my go-to for nails and beauty is Maria Beauty Boutique and I enjoy eating/drinking at most places but especially at Prairie Schooner, Kin, Lily’s, La Torre and have recently discovered Dirty Bird BBQ.”
